Chambers Academy

The Chambers Academy girls and boys basketball teams both advanced to this week’s AISA Class A state tournament in Montgomery.

The Lady Rebels (9-12) secured the No. 3 seed from Region 1 after beating Evangel Christian Academy on Saturday, 46-38, in the region tournament at Macon East Academy. Shelly Keebler posted a team-high 17 points in the victory and was named to the all-tournament team. Britten Stephens chipped in 13 points.

The triumph came one day after the Chambers girls lost their first-round game to Abbeville Christian Academy. The Lady Rebels will play Southern Academy at noon (CST) Tuesday in the elite eight. The game will be held at the Montgomery Multiplex.

The Chambers boys (5-14) will be joining them there. They also secured the No. 3 seed after beating Abbeville on Saturday, 56-55. Payton Allen scored on a putback layup with 23 seconds remaining to secure the victory. He finished with a team-high 22 points. CJ Lyons and Rodrigues Dark added 11 and 10 points apiece.

The victory came one day after the Rebels fell in their second-round game to Evangel, 58-33. The Rebels punched their ticket to state by beating Sparta Academy in the first round on Wednesday, 69-39.

The team will play Marengo Academy in the elite eight at 1:30 p.m. (CST) Tuesday in the Montgomery Multiplex.

LaFayette

The LaFayette High School girls basketball team (12-10) defeated Handley on Saturday, 54-40. Freshman Feliah Greer had a team-high 18 points in the senior night victory.

The Class 2A No. 6 LaFayette boys (16-7) also dispatched Handley, 77-64, behind 17 points from Corey Boston. Markevious Moore (16), Matavais Burton (15) and Keandrae Peterson (11) joined him in double figures.

The Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs will return to action on Friday at Valley.

Springwood

The Springwood School boys basketball team (11-12) will enter this week’s AISA Class AAA state tournament as the No. 2 seed from Region 1.

On Friday, senior guard Gus Davidson drained a fadeaway 3-pointer at the buzzer to knock off Glenwood School in the second round of the Region 1 tournament, 49-48. The victory advanced Springwood to Saturday’s region final, where it fell to Lee Scott Academy, 57-28.

The Wildcats captured their spot at state by defeating Edgewood Academy on Thursday, 49-43.

Springwood will play Morgan Academy in the elite eight on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. (CST) in the Montgomery Multiplex.
