KAY SMALLWOOD CALHOUN

LANETT — Kay Smallwood Calhoun. 71, of Marietta, Ga. passed away to her home on Wednesday, January 24, 2018. Kay was born October 30, 1946. She was the daughter of the late James R. Smallwood and Dorothy M. Smallwood of Lanett, Ala.

Kay graduated from Valley High School in 1964 and later graduated from, her beloved Auburn University. She taught elementary school at 30th Street Elementary in Columbus, Ga., Shawmut Elementary in Valley, Ala., Grayson Elementary in Grayson, Ga. and at Eastside Elementary in Douglasville, Ga. before retiring.

Kay loved going to the beach at Cape San Blas and to the Great Smoky Mountains with her family. She especially enjoyed attending Auburn football games with her Auburn family. She was an avid book reader.

In addition to her husband, Monty Calhoun, she is survived by her sons,  Geoff Phelps, Tucson, Arizona; Brian (Maria) Phelps, Jaco, Costa Rica; Chad (Leeann) Calhoun, Alexander City, Ala,; daughter, Leigh Phelps, Marietta, Ga.; grandchildren Ben, Cory, Enzo, Anna, Brantley and Will; her brother, Tim (Jane) Smallwood, Valley, Ala.; sister-in-law, Kay Gosa, Loganville, Ga.; niece, Kristi (Brent) Piper; nephew, Jeremy (Michelle) Smallwood; great nieces Myah, Ayvah and  Kalyssa and  great nephews Kolby, Trent, Kyle and Kory.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation of a book may be given to a local library or school of your choice.

A drop-in Celebration of Life will  be held at the Plant City Methodist Church Activities Building, located at 110 East 18th Street in Lanett, on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. EST.
