LANETT — The first class of the 6th Annual Chambers County Women’s Self Defense Course will be held next week.

For a $25 registration fee, any woman, those under the age of 18 must have a guardian present, can attend the classes on Jan. 16, 18, 23 and 25 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. EST at the Lanett Hampton Inn. Attendees will be given a bottle of pepper spray, a T-shirt and light refreshments. Those interested can register at the Sheriff’s Department offices.

Macy Whorton with the Chambers County Sheriff’s Department said they are hoping to start putting on the classes quarterly, citing a lot of excitement shown for the event.

“We teach women to use their God-given weapons on 12 vulnerable locations on the body,” she said. “It’s such a beneficial class.”

The first three nights are mostly spent on learning defense before the last night, which consists of a simulation.

Instructors will be T.J. Wood, Keegan Daniel and Whorton of the Chambers County Sheriff’s Department and Sandra Crim of the Valley Police Department.

So far, 10 people have registered. The class can only accommodate 25 people and any extras will be put on a waiting list, Whorton said.

She added that no matter how many people register, the class will go on.

Whorton also noted the interest is there to give the class every quarter but there are a few issues.

“We’re trying to build the program up but we need certified instructors first,” she said.
