The Ridge Grove Volunteer Fire Department will be having a barbecue at 11 a.m. CDT on Saturday, March 17. Dine-in plates (all you can eat) are $9 each. Take out plates will also be available. Boston butts are $30 each, meat is $7 a pound and BBQ sauce $4 a pint. The fire department is located at 9140 County Road 48.

The March meetings of the Chambers County Commission will be taking place on Monday, March 12 and Monday, March 19. These meetings will start at 5 p.m. EST and are held in the commission chamber located in the courthouse in LaFayette. A work session will be held prior to the March 12 meeting.

The Chambers County Library Travelers has open registration for an excursion to the Springer Opera House in Columbus, Ga. to attend West Side Story on Friday, March 16. The cost is $40 and includes motor coach transportation. Please call (334) 768-2161 for additional information.

Fairfax Masonic Lodge N. 876 will meet at 7 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, March 13. All officers and members are asked to be present.

The monthly meeting of the Chambers County 9-1-1 EMA Board will take place at 12:30 p.m. EDT on Thursday, March 15.

Kindergarten registration for any child living in the Lanett City Limits School District will be March 5 through March 23 from 8-3:30 p.m. Requirements for registration are: The child must be 5 on or before Sept. 2; proof of residence within the school district (light bill, lease agreement, etc.); original certified birth certificate, Social Security card, Parent ID and Alabama (blue) immunization certificate must be provided at the time of registration . Please come to the front office of W.O. Lance Elementary for registration.

Electronic recycling  will be taking place at the Chambers County Highway Department April 9-12 and at the Valley Farmers’ Market pavilion on April 13 and 14. There will be no cost to do this, and it will be an ideal time to dispose of unwanted items.

Girl Scouts from the West Point area have started cookie sales in J. Smith Lanier II Park in downtown West Point. Girls from Troop 18069 will be there, rain or shine, from 4 to 6 p.m. every Friday through March 16.

The Kiwanis Club of West Point will be having an Easter egg hunt from 11 a.m. till 2 p.m. EDT on Saturday, March 24, at the West Point Youth Center, located on O.G. Skinner Drive. It’s for special needs children only.

The 68th annual Fredonia Barbecue will be taking place at the Fredonia Community Clubhouse on Saturday, April 7.

Faith Evangelistic Church will hold a VBS fundraiser on March 17. They will be selling BBQ plates that will include 2 BBQ sandwiches, cole slaw, baked beans, chips and a piece of homemade pound cake for $6.  There will also be a bake sale and we will have lots of goodies to choose from and a singing featuring Ricky Doler, The Sanders Family, Power, and One Accord.  The plate sale will begin at 10:30 a.m. EST and the singing will begin at 2 p.m. EDT.  They are located at 3020 Ben Brown Road, Valley.

GriefShare, a special help seminar and small group support for people experiencing grief and loss, will be held on Sunday evenings at The Bridge Church beginning March 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. CDT for 13 weeks excluding Easter, Mother’s day and Father’s Day.

Beginning April 6, Bradshaw Library will offer a 4-week course, “Lifting the Veil: Tuskegee’s Important Role in History” with Dana Chandler, Director of Archives at Tuskegee University. Lectures include: Booker T. Washington, Extension in Tuskegee, Clinton J. Calloway and the Development of the Rosenwald Schools and G. L. Washington and the Founding of the Tuskegee Airmen.
