A call for citizen policing

There has been a rash of violent crimes perpetrated in our area recently.

Between the drive-by shooting at the Valley Waffle House Wednesday and multiple incidents in LaFayette, the Valley area feels as if it is seeing a wave of violence pass through.

But that’s not necessarily true.

While recent weeks have seen several incidents, these remain largely few and far between.

Local law enforcement is on these cases and doing a great job, even considering Lanett and LaFayette are without police chiefs at the moment and West Point’s newly appoint chief Donald Britt won’t start until June. In times such as these, the citizens of each community need to step up and keep an eye out for wrongdoing, more so than usual.

That means being observant at all times and watching out for ourselves and others.

That means telling the authorities and letting them handle situations we see
arise.

While the police departments in our area get their leadership sorted, we the citizens need to do our part to ensure that our home remains a safe place for everyone.
