Lanett, Valley track teams compete at Chattahoochee River Invite

FRANKLIN, Ga. — Two high school track and field teams crossed state lines to compete last week. On Thursday, Lanett and Valley participated in the Chattahoochee River Invitational hosted by Heard County High.

Both teams performed well.

The Lanett girls placed fifth with 69.5 points, and the Valley girls placed ninth with 34 points. On the boys side, Lanett finished sixth with 59 points, and Valley finished eighth with 33 points.

Seventh-grader Trinity Guice led the Lady Panthers at the meet. She won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 37 seconds and took second in the 1,600 meters with a time of 6:07.

Valley’s Darcee Wright didn’t trail too far behind Guice in either race. Wright placed fifth in both the 800 (2:46) and 1,600 (6:24). Lady Rams teammate Andie Bantug finished sixth in the 800 (2:50) and third in the 3,200 (14:15). Valley’s Avery Whorton was fifth in the 3,200 (15:25).

The Lanett girls also received contributions from Octavia Wright on the track and in the field. She took fifth in the 400 meters (1:04), fifth in the 300-meter hurdles (55.34) and third in the high jump (4 feet, 4 inches).

Lady Panthers teammate Jakira Burton placed second in the 400 with a time of 1:03. Valley’s Whitleigh Bright was sixth in the 300 hurdles (55.73).

Jaci Howell rounded out the list of top individual performers on the track. She finished sixth in the 200 meters in 27.96 seconds.

Lanett’s 4×400-meter relay team of Burton, Wright, Samahria Davidson and Ariel Hall took third in 4:28. Valley’s quartet of Valencia Bennett, Jayla Lancaster, Omesha Boozer and Inari Glaze took sixth in 4:49.

The Lanett duo of R’Tianna Oneal and Makyia Broughton stood out in the field events. Oneal claimed a runner-up finish in the shot put (31-9) and a sixth-place finish in the discus (76-4). Broughton, meanwhile, took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 14-10.5.

Braylon Harrington emerged as the top local male athlete. The Lanett senior won the 300 hurdles in 40.7 seconds and placed second in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.66 seconds.

Lanett’s Zameron Boozer and Valley’s Patrick Pigg also notched victories in their best events. Boozer took first in the high jump with a clearance of 6-2. Pigg won the 3,200 meters in 11:08. His teammate, Jacob Peacock, took fourth in 12:12. 

A number of other athletes reeled off top five showings. Lanett’s JaWon Howell finished third in the 400 with a time of 53.95 seconds. Panthers teammate Demetrius Johnson placed third in the 800 with a time of 2:11.

Valley freshman Jacquez Trammell finished third in the high jump (5-8) and fourth in both the long jump (19-11)  and triple jump (41-8.25). Lanett’s Eric Darden was fifth in both the long jump (19-9.5) and triple jump (41-2.5).

Lanett junior D’terrion Glaze threw 39-3.5 to place fourth in the shot put. The Panthers 4×400 relay of Harrington, Howell, Johnson and Quae Houston finished fifth in 3:43.
