LANETT — Hard work and a great attitude are important things to have if one wants to get ahead in life. This is one of the reasons Lanett alumnus Cameron Reed was chosen for an internship with the Governor’s office.

“I’m super excited,” he said. “It’s an opportunity most don’t get. I was one of the few selected and am very blessed to get chosen.”

Reed is one of 16 students selected for an internship that will stretch from May 22 to July 27. The interns will have the opportunity to work with communication and media, appointments, policy, administration, the Governor’s mansion and legal teams.

“My mom was overwhelmed and started crying when she heard the news,” Reed said.

As part of the internship, students also visit other state agencies and departments in order to gain knowledge of the operation of state government as a whole.

In a release by the Governor’s office, the program is described “as a way to provide insight to young college individuals ages 18-24 that are entering their sophomore, junior or senior year and who want to learn more about the executive branch of state government. The internships are designed to provide a realistic overview of routine activity within a government office.”

Reed added that he can’t wait to work alongside the governor and learn how everything works.

At the moment, Reed is a student at Wallace State Community College earning a business management degree.

“I’m hoping to get some leadership experience and learn how the state is run,” he said.

The idea to apply came about, Reed said, due to an enjoyment of politics and the thought that getting into it might be an option in the future.

At this time, Reed said he plans to be a funeral home owner after he completes his college education in 2020.

“After that, I’ll look at what I want to do,” he said.

Reed is an alumnus of Lanett High School where he was known as personable, respectful to all, friendly and someone the coaches and school officials could count on to get a job done in a first-class manner.

“God has been good to me and opened up many opportunities,” he said. “My family has also been very supportive.”
