After several months of campaigning and politicking, election night will soon be upon us. With a little over two weeks to go, it might be a good idea to look at a few of the upcoming election bouts.

Races that could be settled on June 5 include seats for U.S. Congress, Alabama Senate District 13, House District 37, a judgeship in the 5th Judicial Circuit, a seat on the Alabama Board of Education, the District No. 3 seat on the Chambers County Commission as well as the offices of Chambers County probate judge and county coroner, among others.

Candidates for all positions have made the rounds, going door-to-door and attending candidate forums. Signs have been placed everywhere and advertisements can be seen on TV, in the newspaper and online.

It is practically impossible to avoid the upcoming election. However, it is an undeniable fact that voter turnout is never as high as it should be.

Every election should have as close to 100 percent turnout as possible, whether the elections be local, regional or national.

It doesn’t matter if you agree with any of the candidates or not, you should get out and vote.

If you believe in anything, you should vote. America is founded on the idea that to do the most amount of good for the most amount of people, everyone needs to participate.

With low voter turnout, it is impossible to know what a majority of people believe or think on any one issue.

We have the power and the obligation to change this narrative by participating in the cornerstone of American democracy. Apart from being a civic duty, it is vital to the sustained existence of our country.

If you don’t, then you have no right to complain about the results.
