MR. Lester L. McCollough

LANETT — Mr. Lester L. McCollough, 86, of Lanett Ala. passed away at Bethany House in Auburn, Ala. on Sunday April 29, 2018.

Lester was born on November 6, 1931 in Alexander City Ala. to Valter and Ola Lee McCollough. He was a graduate of Lanett High School where he received numerous football recognitions and was an Eagle Scout. He also received a scholarship to play football at the University of Alabama. He had a 26-year career as a postman at the Lanett Post office and was well known  as the “whistling postman.”

Lester was blessed with a beautiful singing voice. He sang in the church choir, in community theater productions and many local events.

Lester was preceded in death by his parents Valter and Ola McCollough, sister Danueline Brown and brother Goudy McCollough.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Elaine McCollough, sons Larry (Connie) McCollough of West Point Ga., Gary (Tina) McCollough of the Lake Harding community and David McCollough of Knoxville. Tenn.

Lester was blessed with 22 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at 10 a.m. EDT at the Lanett First Christian Church, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. EDT at the First Christian Church. The Rev. David Bradshaw will be officiating.
