WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. — Dorothy White Morris, 91, passed away May 20, 2018 at her home in West Columbia, S.C. Mrs. Morris was born in Chambers County, Ala. to James Roy and Ada Ellise White. She married her childhood sweetheart, Jim Tom Morris, in 1947 and they were a devoted couple for 68 years.

After Jim’s graduation from Auburn, the family relocated to Maryland, where she raised their two sons.

Following her graduation from the University of Maryland, she taught in Maryland public schools. She was a talented artist and weaver. Later she returned to Alabama where she worked as a high school guidance counselor and council member for the City of Valley, Ala.

She and her husband relocated to Columbia after her retirement. She was predeceased by her husband, her brother, James Roy White, Jr., and parents,

Mrs. Morris is survived by her sister, Jeanine Hamby, sons James and Jacquith, daughters-in-law Maureen and Barbara, granddaughters Erin Maedora Morris and Lily Elizabeth Freier, great grandchildren Marshall and Georgia Grace Freier, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was a gracious lady and a friend to everyone she met. Quick witted and a master of Southern charm, she also proclaimed herself a “feminist in high school before the word even existed.” She was endlessly curious, a selfless caregiver, and always active in the community. She served on the board of the Lanier Memorial Hospital, and had a day named after her in Alabama for her work on preserving historic buildings.

She enjoyed being a docent for Historic Columbia as well as a choir and glee club member in the many places she lived. In her journal, she wrote “There are those who are satisfied with their contribution to society and now look forward to play, exercise, and relaxation. Good for them. Some need to keep working and learning.” That was Dorothy. Her family thanks the Still Hopes community and her Solutions partners for their support, and Palmetto Health Hospice for their care. The family will hold a private celebration of life.
