Two republicans faced off last night for the role of Chief Justice. Tom Parker and incumbent Lyn Stuart were both vying the position. Parker came out on top with 2,053 votes giving him 71.93 percent to win.

Parker is an associate justice on the state Supreme Court. In a press release, he stated, “Alabama is a conservative state. We revere the Constitution and the Rule of Law. And I believe our courts are the battleground for our God-given rights as free people.”

Stuart was the acting chief justice seeking a full term. She took over in 2016 following former Chief Justice Roy Moore’s suspension from the court.

Only two candidates appeared on the ballot for the race for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Place Number 4: John Bahakel and Jay Mitchell.

Mitchell won with 78.8 percent of the vote, receiving 1,963 votes in total. Mitchell is an attorney with a lot of experience with the Republican Party.

“We need strong conservatives on the Alabama Supreme Court – and that’s what I’ll be,” he stated on his website. “My judicial philosophy will be simple and straightforward – What does the law say? Because that’s how I will rule.”

Bahakel is an attorney that previously ran for District 43 of the Alabama House of Representatives.
