Child reported brain dead in Opelika

OPELIKA — Lee County Coroney Bill Harris, in a release Friday, announced the death of seven year old Liam Kawaguchi of Opelika. He was found unresponsive Thursday, June 21 at a day camp that was being held at the Opelika Covington Recreation Center and has since died.

Opelika Police and EMS were called to the recreation center at approximately 11:40 a.m. Thursday to an unresponsive male who was having CPR performed on him.

The child was rushed to the East Alabama Medical Center emergency room before being flown to Birmingham to Children’s Hospital of Alabama in critical condition. According to the release his condition did not improve and he was declared brain dead.

A postmortem examination is scheduled to be performed by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences office in Montgomery. The case remains under investigation by the Opelika Police, Lee County Coroner’s Office and the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.
