Last week the citizens of LaFayette had to suffer under a boil water notice for a few days while the city had the water tested to make sure it was not contaminated following a fire hydrant rupture.

Thankfully, the results came back clean and on Friday afternoon the boil water notice was lifted.

The city government should be commended for taking the necessary action of putting the notice into place. Clean water is a necessity and LaFayette made sure its citizens were safe.

However, the city did make one mistake.

To be sure, the notice was immediately implemented. Efforts were made to alert everyone. Signs were placed on doors and a few posts were made online Wednesday but The Valley Times-News, and a majority of Times-News readers, had to wait until Thursday before being alerted due to an oversight by the city.

Add in the nature of the notice and the possibility of a major health issue had the water actually been contaminated and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.

As stated earlier, the city of LaFayette saw the problem and then took efforts to correct it while keeping people informed. Unfortunately there were a few areas missed and while there were no negative consequences, there could have been.

Hopefully the next time there is a problem, this oversight will not occur.
