LaFAYETTE — A Chambers County man has been charged with unlawful imprisonment and strangulation following an incident Sunday.

David Louis Williams, 50, of LaFayette, has been charged with unlawful imprisonment, second degree, and domestic violence by strangulation after being arrested at approximately 9 a.m. Wednesday morning after a warrant was put out for his arrest.

According to officials, a report was made to the LaFayette Police Department on Sunday, June 24, apparently shortly after the crime had occurred. The victim of the crime was reported to be Williams’ girlfriend.

“It was reported that he held her against her will for a significant amount of time and during that time assaulted her,” said Sergeant Roderick Brock.

Alabama Code Title 13A defines unlawful imprisonment in the second degree as a Class C misdemeanor that occurs when someone restrains another adult without their consent.

According to Sgt. Brock, Williams was arrested Wednesday morning after appearing at the police station on his own. He had come to “tell his side” and refute the reports but was unaware of the warrant out for his arrest. Officers took him in with no struggle.

It was reported that the victim had only minor injuries.

Sgt. Brock advises anyone who is suffering from or has any knowledge about domestic abuse to contact the police immediately.

“In cases like this with anything related to domestic violence that may occur, come and report it and we will take it from there,” he said. “Make sure you report everything and anything that happens. Don’t be afraid to come to us. The person who reported in this case did the right thing because Williams is now in jail.”
