HUGULEY — A servant’s heart is what drives 67- year-old Cheryl Myers to complete her daily work, a passion for her but a possible job to others.

A Valley native, Myers is the current director of the Christian Service Center, Inc. and has held the position since opening the ministry in 1990. Through this, she has been able to help many in need around the community.

“We saw that needs could be met throughout the community, so we began to fulfill those needs,” she explained.

Myers has been married for 47 years to Hermon Myers. In that time, they have shown people Jesus through their acts of service. Together they have three sons, a daughter and five grandchildren. In addition, they have had more than 90 foster children live with them over the course of their marriage.

Through fostering nearly 100 children,  they have been able to see a different view of the world. A part that needed clothes, food and Jesus. When they realized this need, and the help the community could bring, they began to rely on the community a bit more in order to fulfill those needs.

“There are many people in this community who are so gracious and happy to help others, they have been a huge help within this ministry,” Myers said.

Myers does other things within her community in addition to her ministry. She enjoys helping others through her church, Shawmut Baptist, and helping families through the Circle of Care. She explained that her hobbies are her job.

“I work with the most wonderful volunteers and I absolutely love what I do,” she said, noting her inspiration comes from Jesus. “My inspiration is knowing what Christ does for me and being able to share that with others.”

Through her ministry, Myers and her volunteers are able to assist over 200 families each month with food, clothing and other needed items.

Her motive for continuing this ministry is the hope that her community will understand that everyone has something the Christian Service Center can use to help someone in need, whether it be a smile, a prayer or even a hug.

“It is amazing to see the families who have received assistance returning with donations to help someone else,” she said, maintaining that her hope for the community is that they are able to really see just who Jesus is and how much he loves the least of these.
