VALLEY — It was announced early Monday morning that one man involved in a shooting on Saturday, May 26 is now being charged with manslaughter.

Stanley Jeff Thrift, 56, of Valley was arrested on June 1 and charged with the Class B felony for fatally shooting Troy Boyd after an alleged property dispute. Thrift was processed at the Valley Police Department and then taken to the Chambers County Detention Facility.

“Mr. Thrift and Mr. Boyd were in the middle of an argument that was escalating,” Valley Police Chief Tommy Weldon said. “Mr. Thrift pulled a pistol out of his back pocket and pointed it toward Mr. Boyd. There was a struggle between the men and then Mr. Thrift pulled the trigger and Mr. Boyd was hit.”

The weapon used was a .38-caliber revolver.

The incident happened on the 1400 block of Hopewell Road in Valley at approximately 4 p.m. that Saturday afternoon. No arrests were made until officers were able to determine if the shooting happened as an act of self-defense or not.

“We met with the district attorney’s office and presented the evidence that we had,” Chief Weldon said. “They recommended that we charge Mr Thrift with reckless manslaughter.”

According to Chief Weldon, Thrift showed no resistance during his arrest and had no known premeditated motive for shooting Boyd.

“Mr. Thrift turned himself in,” he said. “We had contact with him throughout the week and he turned himself in once he found out that we had issued a warrant. He was processed and taken to the Chambers County Detention Facility.”

There were three other individuals at the residence when the shooting took place. All three were unharmed and have spoken to police during the investigation.

“We interviewed everyone who was there and I don’t believe there will be any further investigation,” Chief Weldon said.

According to the Valley Police Department the case is closed and Chief Weldon has not heard anything from Boyd’s family about potential legal action.
