SHAWMUT — The Baptist Women group of Shawmut First Baptist Church met Tuesday, June 5 at the home of Nita Abney. Nita welcomed everyone and called on Janice Sorrell to open the meeting in prayer and blessings on the food.

Mae Thompson presented the prayer calendar using scripture from Deuteronomy 31:1-8. She read the names of the missionaries having birthdays today and prayed for them and other requests made by those present. Elizabeth Hall read the minutes of the previous meeting.

In the absence of the president, Nita conducted the business session and spoke on the American Legion’s recent Memorial Day program.

Those present were: Elizabeth Hall, Lois Passmore, Janice Sorrell, Shirley Bills, Mae Thompson, Wanda Phipps, and visitors: Carolyn Prichard, Shirley Austin, Heather Christensen and the hostess, Nita Abney. The attendance was low this month due to sickness and some away on vacation.

The Golden Heirs of First Baptist Church of Shawmut met Tuesday, June 12 in the Family Life Center for their monthly meeting. Mrs. Billie Jean Clem welcomed everyone and asked Terry Landreth to open the meeting with prayer. The group then  sang their theme song “This Is The Day” after which Bill Spears gave the treasurer’s report and Liz Landreth read the minutes of the May meeting.

Nita Abney gave everyone a flag sticker to wear for Flag Day which was June 14. She encouraged them to fly a flag at their home if they had one and said if they didn’t, to let her know and she would get one for them.

Nita then introduced Gary Freeman, director of Lakewood Senior Living in Valley. In his remarks, Gary noted that Lakewood has 2 separate units, one is for people with Alzheimer’s who require a lot of attention  and the other unit for those who require less. Each unit houses 16 people in a home-like environment where they can bring their own furniture and other items to make it their home away from home.

All cooking and housekeeping is provided and help with medications is another plus. Gary gave a very informative program and left pamphlets about Lakewood containing  information to be considered should one reach the time in their lives where they should not be living alone in their home. There was a time for questions and answers following the program. 

Billy Tolbert closed the meeting with a blessing on the delicious covered dish meal they were about to enjoy.  Those attending were: Nita Abney, Sally Breedlove, Billie Jean Clem, Jody Colley, Liz Landreth, Terry Landreth, Curtis Moore, Carolyn Oliver, Lois Passmore, Norman Passmore, Bill Spears, Billy Tolbert, Bobby Tolbert, Linda Tolbert, Dot Williams and the guest speaker, Gary Freeman.
