› All local veterans are invited to attend A Day for the Veteran to be held from 10 a.m. till 3 p.m. EDT on Saturday, July 21st at Valley Community Center. It will be an opportunity for local veterans to meet representatives of Veterans Affairs and other organizations to learn of benefits they have earned because of their service but may not be aware of.

› The Kiwanis Club of West Point meets regularly the 2nd Monday of each month at 12 noon at Momma Goldberg’s and the 4th Monday at 6:30 PM at Momma Goldberg’s in historic downtown West Point. Join us and see what Kiwanis is planning in West Point and Lanett. Newcomers are welcome!

› The 109th consecutive reunion of the Earnest/Ernest family will be held on Saturday 28 July 2018. We meet at the Shady Grove Church Family Center near Opelika, Alabama. A covered dish lunch will be served at 11:30 CT so bring your best culinary dish and make all the other cooks green with envy. We will begin to gather at 10 a.m. To get to Shady Grove Christian Church, turn off I-85 at exit 66. Go north on old US 29 (also known as West Point Pkwy) toward West Point. Look for the Shady Grove Church sign.

› Ajin/Wooshin USA executives and managers will celebrate of the 68th anniversary of the Korean War and would like to invite the Veterans of  from Chambers County to express their appreciation and sacrifice. The event will be held Monday, July 16, at 11 a.m. ET at the Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika.

  The Chambers County Commission will meet on Monday, July 23rd. The regular meeting will take place inside the commission chamber in the county courthouse and start at 4 p.m. CDT (5 p.m. Eastern). There will be a meeting of the Commission’s Rules, Ways and Means Committee at 2 p.m. CDT (3 Eastern) in the Commission office on the same day. A meeting of the Human Resources Committee that had been planned for July 23 has been rescheduled for Monday, August 6th at 2 p.m. CDT. The Valley City Council is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. EDT on  July 23. The Lanett City Council will be meeting at 6 p.m. EDT on Monday, July 16.

› The renewal of animal licenses in the City of Valley began on Friday, June 1. These licenses can be purchased at the city clerk’s office at city hall. The fee for the license will depend on the age of the animal and whether they have been spayed or neutered. Every animal that’s at least four months of age must have a license. If they have been spayed or neutered, the fee is $10 for animals under 12 months of age and $5 for older animals.

› The West Point Active Life Center is a recreation center for independent adults who are at least 55 years of age. Lunch is provided five days a week for those who are 60 and older. There’s also activities, games, billiards, quilting, exercise classes, trips and every Wednesday, FREE BINGO at 10:30 a.m. EDT. The Active Life Center serves West Point and the surrounding area.

› The Christian Service Center is open from 8 a.m. till noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. It’s open on Tuesdays by appointment and from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. To apply for assistance, you will need to bring your current electric bill and a photo ID. The Center is currently accepting donations of children’s clothing that’s in good condition.

› A monthly dementia support group meets at 6:30 p.m. EDT on the first Tuesday of the month at the Chattahoochee Hospice office, located at 6 Medical Park N0rth in Valley. A monthly grief support group meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month at the Hospice office. For more information, call (334) 756-8043.

› The Valley Farmers’ Market is open from 3 to 6 p.m. EDT every Friday afternoon through the growing season. There will be up to ten Alabama farmers there this Friday with such items as peaches, tomatoes, collards, squash, zucchini, red potatoes, watermelons, cantaloupes, rattlesnake beans and baked bread. Friday, July 20th will be Free Tomato Sandwich Day at the Farmers’ Market.
