LANETT — On Friday morning, the Lanett Fire & EMS Department hosted a hands-on class involving sports-related injuries and sports medicine.

“Adam Daum, head athletic trainer for Point University, contacted me to ask if we’d be interested in the class,” Lanett Fire & EMS Chief Johnny Allen told The Valley Times-News. “The goal of the class was to introduce the Point training staff to EMS providers in Lanett and West Point to share ideas, techniques and protocols each department follows.”

Accompanying Daum to the LFD were Kelly Jahn, Danielle Bryant, Marissa Pazik, Kari Washburn and Ty Campbell of the Skyhawks training staff. They are involved with all 19 sports offered by the university. Skyhawk sports will be getting very busy over the next few weeks. Fall classes at the J. Smith Lanier II Academic Center will start on Aug. 22. Point’s football season opens with back-to-back road games versus Ave Maria University on Aug. 25 and Stenson University on Sept. 1 before having their home opener versus Edward Waters on Sept. 8.

Joining the class were firefighter/EMTs Brandon Ashford, Grayson Hope, Seth Higgins and Dennis Walls from the West Point Fire Department. All hands were on deck for the LFD.

“While the trainer and EMS personnel share the same goal of providing the best care possible for the injured athlete, we do have some different requirements, protocols and procedures,” Chief Allen said. “This class gave us a chance to go over the two disciplines and gain a clear picture of what we expect of each other should a sports injury emergency happen.”

Allen said it will be mutually beneficial for Lanett, West Point and Point to work together.

“No only will it be helpful during Point events, it will also help us review our plans for how we handle the athletic events at our local schools,” he said. “One thing is clear. Lanett Fire & EMS, West Point Fire & EMS and the Point University training staff have a common goal – to provide the best care possible to the young men and women who participate in athletic events at all levels.”
