WEST POINT — The city council of West Point approved an extension for WellStar Medical Group Family Physicians and an amendment to the special event application, policy and ordinance concerning alcohol.

The WellStar extension was approved unanimously by the council for two years.

Last week the council met with Verlene Luna, assistant vice president of operations for WellStar Health System. She was there to discuss the status of the WellStar Medical Group building remaining on 10th Street.

Luna told the board that WellStar wanted to stay in West Point and was willing to either build a new location, take over a different building or some other option but needed a year to put a plan together.

Councilmember Henry Hutchinson later said he was willing to give WellStar two years and Mayor Steve Tramell suggested that he was amenable to that provided they have a plan in place within a year.

The council also unanimously approved adding a news special event application and policy for large events in the Downtown River Park and on city streets and property. The measure also adds language covering alcohol at events.

At last week’s meeting, the council noted that the current plan does not have a proposed cut off time for events and suggested an 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. and 8 a.m. to midnight deadline depending on the day and it was suggested the council include rules for alcohol sales during special events.

City Manager Ed Moon suggested a $50 fee for caterers, provided they do not have a business license beforehand.

The amendment also asserts that possessing and consuming alcoholic beverages are not allowed on city property except when said property is part of a special event.

Both of these measures were unanimously approved by the board.

The city council will hold its next work session on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 5:30 p.m.
