COLUMBIANA — The regular season win streak for AISA No. 4 Chambers Academy is now at 28.

The Rebels defeated Cornerstone Christian 57-7 last Friday night, upping its point advantage over opponents to 193-21 this year as well.

“You’d like for your kids to be in a more competitive game to learn some things about them,” Chambers Academy head football coach Jason Allen said. “But I’ll take what’s been going on. If we could do this about nine more times, then I’d be perfectly fine with it.

I thought we were still playing hard, executing at a pretty high level. Our kids are getting after it, I see a lot of good things, which is a lot better football team than the four teams we’ve played so far.”

Up to this point in the season, the Rebels have kept their intensity up through game-speed intrasquad practices and drills. Now, Chambers Academy is entering a part of the year where intense practices will not be the only challenge of the week.

The next three opponents for the Rebels are all currently at least 2-1, including Southern Academy, Springwood School and the 3-1 Kingwood Christian Lions. Southern Academy is coming off of a 43-9 win over Marengo Academy.

“We think this is going to be by far one of the best teams we see all year,” Allen said of Southern Academy. “They’re big, they’re physical and I’m anticipating a four-quarter game. That concerns me because a lot of our guys have not played four quarters yet, so we’ve got to make sure that we’re hydrated, we’re ready to go and all those things. It’s going to be a real tough game.”

The only two games that the Rebels have lost in the last two seasons were in the AISA state championship game. One of the departments that Allen wants the team to improve in is passing. One Friday night against Cornerstone Christian, first-year starter and sophomore Payton Allen completed 3-of-3 pass attempts for 103 yards and two touchdowns. The key to developing a successful passing game is to provide the quarterback with the necessary amount of protection, according to Coach Allen. Leading the protectors this season is senior Alston Knox.

“He’s just a throwback guy that loves to hit somebody every play, he wants to put them on their back,” Jason Allen said. “He lives for that, he loves that part of the game. Those are the kind of players that I really enjoy coaching. He really is a road grader for us up front, and our run game has gotten much better, so has his pass protection and he’s a really good football player for us.”

While Chambers Academy looks to extend its school record for consecutive regular-season wins, they still have a ways to go to catch up to the record that Edgewood Academy set earlier this decade. The Wildcats won 71 consecutive games, postseason included, from Oct. 28, 2010, to Nov. 20, 2015.
