LANETT — The Lanett City Council on Monday approved one paving contract and pulled the plug on another one.

Evergreen Erosion Control of Opelika, Ala. was awarded a contract of $1.925 million for Phase II of the Lanett Airport paving project. This involves paving the runway and installing lights. The Federal Aviation Administration will provide 90 percent of the funding, or more than $1.7 million. A little more than $96,000 will be provided by the State Airport Development Fund with the city contributing the remaining $96,000.

The city is in the process of having a new 4,400-foot-long runway to replace a previous one that was around 3,100 feet in length. Portions of the old runway will serve as a taxiway for the new runway.

At the recommendation of Mayor Kyle McCoy, the council unanimously approved a resolution to revoke a contract to Chris Clark Grading & Paving, Inc. for street paving due to poor job performance. The $304,000 contract had been awarded on June 4 with a 60-day period for completion. That expired on Aug. 4.

“The mayor has tried numerous times to contact Chris Clark regarding the contract, but no return call has been made,” the resolution reads. “(This resolution) hereby revokes the contract, and the council directs the mayor to rebid and resubmit the contract for paving bids.”

“I know many of you have been asked when these streets are going to be paved,” McCoy said to the council. “They were supposed to be paved by Aug. 4.”

The streets include approximately 1,770 linear feet of South 8th Avenue to South Jennings Avenue, approximately 440 linear feet of South Jennings near South 8th Street, 680 linear feet of South 8th, 260 linear feet of South Jennings near CVS Pharmacy, approximately 380 linear feet of South 14th Street from South Jennings to Gilmer Avenue, approximately 260 linear feet of South 15th Street near CVS, approximately 230 linear feet of South 3rd Avenue, approximately 1,420 linear feet along North 12th Street from the intersection of North 6th Avenue to the Georgia state line near Lanier Avenue, and approximately 440 linear feet of North 4th Avenue between 12th and 14th streets.

McCoy said he hoped a new contractor could be named and these streets could be resurfaced as soon as possible.
