Sunday was the latest community block party in the waning days of summer.

West Point Day brought out hundreds of people of all ages with family, food and fun. The event was insured and organized by West Point Vision.

DJ Ice and the Slow Talkin’ DJ were on the turntables as people enjoyed the day and caught up with each other. Some West Point natives even returned from other states such as New York, California and Ohio.

East 9th Street was blocked off between Avenues G and L to hold the event with smells of grilled meats floating in the air as the DJs continued playing old school soul and R&B music. About 30 golf carts transported the attendees around the area and there was also a cool off station available for everyone.

West Shawmut Day was a similar neighborhood event that brought out the community earlier this summer and at both events, for a few hours, every citizen could just enjoy a good time with one another.

This is an election year and there are various hot topics in the country that have come with heated debates.

Community days remind everyone that despite the differences they may have in opinions or views, individuals can still come together and remain close. Through the ups and downs, there are fewer things in life that are more important than a community in one’s development.

Just like marriage, it is important for a community to remember the good times like West Point Day to understand why they love the community and why they don’t want to leave the community.

Sunday marked only the second annual West Point Day and it may be the beginning of a successful event that reminds everyone that we are all more alike than different.
