LaFAYETTE — LaFayette residents who were disappointed when a downtown pizza business closed should take heart. Another one is on the way.

At a called meeting on Thursday, the LaFayette City Council approved a restaurant retail liquor license application for the Red Wagon Concession and Catering, LLC. The application was approved by the state ABC Board, and Police Chief George Rampey told the council that he could see no legal reason to deny the request.

The business is owned by Vickie Clark of Phenix City, Ala., who has several other pizza businesses. She does business under the name Pizza D Action 3.

City Clerk Louis Davidson is down with the flu and missed the meeting. A resolution he requested for the city to have a level funding budget failed to pass. A resolution needs four votes to pass in LaFayette. The resolution had the support of Mayor Barry Moody and council members Neal McCurdy and Toney Thomas. It fell short of four votes because Michael Ellis voted against it and Tammie Williams was absent from the meeting.

Ellis questioned why LaFayette police officers had been providing security at Auburn University home football games (as many law enforcement officers from east Alabama do). He said he didn’t have a problem with them being there but thought that he and fellow council members who were on the police committee should know about it.

In other action, the council approved some purchases requested by water department personnel. This includes some chemicals and some repair work on an aerator. This repair work will cost an estimated $130,000. The aerator is an essential piece of equipment and is approximately 25 years old.

The council unanimously approved a request to send a letter asking that the Handy Cemetery be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Should this take place, a historical marker will be placed there.
