WEST POINT — The investigation into the disappearance of West Point resident Carol Evans remains open, despite no new leads being reported since November.

Evans, 75, was reported missing from her home on Lower Lovelace Road last November. Her husband said he went outside to mow the lawn around 2 p.m. and that his wife was gone when he came back in. Evans was suffering from an “altered mental state,” according to officers.

Troup County Sheriff James Woodruff said that despite the lack of new leads, the case is still active and “always will be.”

“We haven’t heard a thing,” he said, “but we’ve kept it on Crimestoppers and put out signs asking anyone with information to come forward. We’ve hoped someone saw something.”

The last lead in the case concerned a “suspicious car” reportedly in the area around the time of Evans’ disappearance.

According to a Troup County Sheriff’s Office post on Facebook, the car was described as a two-door, rust-brown Cutlass – possibly a mid-to-late 80’s model – with plain rims and a loud muffler driven by a black male. The witness stated that the car turned on Lower Lovelace Road and was seen leaving at a high rate of speed, running the stop sign, turning left onto Shoemaker Road and that he had never seen this car before.

Sheriff Woodruff added that his deputies found the car mentioned in the post and were able to question the driver and a cousin he was visiting, however no useable information was gained.

The sheriff described the overall case as an “absolute mystery.”

“We got out there that day [that Evans was reported missing],” he said, noting the search included not only officers but dogs, horses, drones and helicopters with infrared cameras. “We started on Shoemaker Road and searched everything. Then we turned on to Gilbert Road.”

The only relevant witness, he noted, was a woman that saw Evans and her husband out walking earlier in the day.
