WEST POINT — In a brief work session on Thursday afternoon, the West Point City Council reviewed some new business that will be action items at Monday’s regular council meetings. These involved a proposed street closure, the adoption of a Freeport Resolution for certain tax exemption and a millage rate resolution.

An unused portion of Avenue F is proposed for closure. This is being done at the request of the West Point Development Authority.

The action on the Freeport Resolution is mostly a formality. A resolution that has prior council approval was somehow lost at the state level, and another copy is needed. It should be no problem to do this. For residents of the city to benefit from it, though, it has to be documented along with resolutions from Troup County and its cities.

The city is looking at a millage rate rollback of 9,752 mills. Even with the rollback, the city will have a net increase in property tax revenue.

Several members of the council commented on how pleased they were with the way everything went on West Point Day, which took place on East 9th Street on Sunday afternoon.

“It was a lot of fun for everyone,” said Councilmember Sandra Thornton. “There are some things that can be improved on.”

Sponsoring organization West Point Vision has the better part of an entire year to work on that.

Some local businesses weren’t prepared for the influx of people on Labor Day weekend. The Dollar General store sold out of tents and some of the local convenience stores sold out of ice.

The city of West Point will hold its business meeting on Monday, Sept. 10 at 5:30 p.m.
