Beulah stops receiving votes after loss, Lanett and Chambers stand pat

The number of local teams who appeared in the state rankings to decrease this week. In the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association prep football poll, only Lanett, Chambers Academy and LaFayette received votes. In an earlier week this season, all six Alabama teams in the Greater Valley Area at least received votes to be ranked in the state.

Beulah is the latest team to stop receiving votes after suffering a 20-14 loss to 3-3 Bullock County last Friday night. Strength of schedule was the only legitimate reason for the Bobcats not to be ranked previously in the team’s 5-0 start. Former Bobcat Hunter Bowling tweeted at the players after the loss but the team members didn’t seem to be too worried.

“We’re going to be straight,” Bobcats senior lineman Hunter Bryant replied. “Headed to the playoffs.”

Lanett remains the No. 1 team in 1A after taking in a week of rest last Friday night.

The Panthers return to action this Friday against Loachapoka. Lanett has three games remaining in the regular season before continuing its championship defense in the postseason. Senior safety Trikweze Bridges is four interceptions shy of tying the all-time career record of 36 in the state.

Chambers Academy remains as the AISA No. 4 team after shutting out Pickens Academy 49-0 last Friday night.

The win marked the third shut out for the Rebels’ defense and the fifth game where Chambers allowed one or fewer touchdowns this season. Chambers Academy has two games remaining in the regular season before the playoffs.

LaFayette is still receiving votes to be ranked in 2A after a 41-7 win over Fayetteville last week. After a tough stretch of games against ranked opponents in the first half of the season, the remainder of the Bulldogs’ regular season looks winnable, as the three opponents have a combined record of 3-16. LaFayette has its homecoming game this Friday against Vincent.
