Local teams keep positions near top of state rankings

The more things change, the more they stay the same as it relates to the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) prep rankings poll.

As far as teams in the Greater Valley Area go, Lanett and Chambers Academy have kept the same positions as last week’s polls.

Lanett remains the 1A No.1, a position the team has held for all but one week this season after dropping the season-opener to 5A Valley at home, 28-22. Lanett is coming off a 67-0 shutout win against Verbena in a victory where the Panthers scored on the first play of drives multiple times. Entering the final game of the regular season at Billingsley, senior safety Trikweze bridges needs three interceptions to tie the all-time career record for picks in the state of Alabama. After Friday’s game against the Bears, the Panthers have an open week to recover before the playoffs begin.

The Rebels of Chambers Academy are still the AISA No. 3-seed squad after completing the program’s third-consecutive undefeated regular season. With last week’s 48-0 shutout against Marengo Academy, this season’s Rebels became the defense that allowed the fewest points in school history. Chambers Academy has won 34 regular season games in a row and the team is currently enjoying an open week before starting postseason play.

LaFayette remains the only other team in the area to receive votes in the poll. The 2A Bulldogs are finishing the regular season strong after falling to three ranked opponents earlier this season. LaFayette has one more test in the regular season, hosting 2-6 Horseshoe Bend this week before having an open week on Nov. 2.
