COLUMBUS. Ga. — Mrs. Mary C. “Mae Cue” Brooks, 101, of Columbus, Ga. and formerly of Lanett, Ala. passed away Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018 at Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus. Mrs. Brooks was born February 13, 1917 to the parentage of the late Mr. Sylvester and Mrs. Mittie Carlisle in Chambers County, Ala.

Mae Cue was a faithful member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Senior Choir.

Much of Mae Cue’s life was spent in Lanett, where she met and married her husband, the late Leroy Denson Brooks. She worked at the Lanett Mill, Bleachery and Dye Works, and as a seamstress at Bartlett’s Clothing Store.

Mae Cue, known as “Madea” to her only child, was a superb mother; she was always willing to offer support and wisdom. Though small in stature, her two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter called her “Big Momma.” Size was not an obstacle, and it was known clearly who was fully in charge when Big Momma was present. She enjoyed traveling with her family near and far, but she was not a fan of airplanes.

Her baking is remembered very fondly – best chocolate cakes, caramel cakes, and millionaire pies on this side of creation. Mae Cue loved to celebrate the holidays, and she was particularly fond of Easter.

She leaves to cherish her memories: a daughter, Mary Marlene Sharpe (John) of Columbus Ga.; grandson, Michael Sumrall of Chicago, Ill.; grandaughter, Michelle Sumrall of Macon, Ga. and one great granddaughter, Aleisha Sumrall of Macon, Ga. and a host of family, church members and friends. A homegoing celebration for Mrs. Brooks will be held on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018 at 11 a.m. EST at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Lanett, with the Dr. Jesse Walker, pastor, serving as eulogist and the Rev. Alfred Booker assisting. Interment will follow in the Pine Hill Cemetery. The remains will lie in state at the church on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018 from 10 a.m. EST until the funeral hour.
