COLUMBUS, GA. — The Springwood girls basketball team improved to 6-4 on the season with a big 61-26 win over Calvary Christian of Columbus, GA on Thursday night.

The Lady Wildcats traveled to Columbus for the 6 p.m. tip and quickly got into an up and down game with the Lady Knights. Springwood jumped to an 18-11 first quarter lead. It was in the second quarter that Springwood employed a disruptive full-court press that enabled them to force many turnovers and hold Calvary Christian to a single 3-point field goal as their only score of the quarter. Effectively, this put the game out of reach at 33-14 at the half.

Calvary did manage to stay in range playing the third quarter at only a 12-8 deficit but then Springwood opened up a 30-point lead with 6 minutes to go in the game.

All eight Springwood players scored and four players were in double figures. Junior captain Andie Martin showed her developing versatility by scoring inside and out led the Lady Wildcats with 18. Sophomore Emily Drake added 13. Senior Dee Williams and junior captain McKayla Barber both contributed 10 points each.

“After we got an idea about the pace of play we responded well,” Springwood girls head basketball coach Rick Johnson said. “Our passing continues to develop, which makes us a much better team as we create the spacing this team really needs to be successful. We don’t get much time to enjoy it though as we turn around and play [today].”

The 61 points is the highest point total of the year for the Lady Wildcats.

Springwood is right back in action tonight at home in the Boswell Gymnasium with a matchup of crosstown rivals as Chambers Academy pays a visit to Springwood. JV Girls start the action at 5 pm EST. with JV Boys, Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys to follow.
