LaFayette girls and Lanett boys out, LaFayette boys re-enter new ASWA poll

There is only one local team ranked in this week’s Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) prep poll.

The 21-3 LaFayette boys are now back in the 2A top 10, ranked No. 9 after wins against Ranburne, Opelika and Lanett last week. The Bulldogs are in a position to host the area tournament with an undefeated start against Ranburne, Woodland and Horseshoe Bend. LaFayette suffered two losses to out-of-state teams over the holiday break, and the Bulldogs’ third loss of the season came against local-rival Lanett, a team LaFayette won the season series 2-1 against.

The  Lanett boys fell out of this week’s rankings after suffering losses to LaFayette and Westbrook Christian. Junior Zameron Boozer and sophomore Trey Abner are consistently putting up some of their best numbers so far this season recently. Boozer and Abner tied for the team-best 19 points on Tuesday night against Notasulga in a victory that clinched the Panthers’ regular-season area title.

The 15-5 LaFayette girls basketball team were nominated, but fell out of this week’s rankings after being the 2A No. 9 team last week. LaFayette has lost two games in a row against Opelika and Lanett. The Bulldogs are undefeated in area play. Sophomore Ebony Williams led the team in scoring last week after teams are starting giving Feliah Greer different looks defensively.

The Lanett girls basketball team received a nomination in 1A for the first time this season after defeating Wadley, LaFayette, Booker T. Washington and Notasulga. The Panthers are led by senior Makaiya Broughton.

A local team that remains on the outside looking in is the 12-4 Chambers boys team. Led by Payton Allen, the Rebels are coming off of a 68-50 win over East Memorial on Tuesday night.
