Valley boys, Springwood girls shine at track meets over weekend

GREATER VALLEY AREA — It was a busy weekend for local track and field athletes. Beulah, LaFayette, Lanett and Valley were all at the JD Evilsizer Panther Invitational at Smiths Station High School, while Springwood School athletes were at the AISA MS State Meet that was hosted at Escambia Academy.

Boys Smiths Station meet

The Valley boys arguably had the best weekend of all local groups, led by Jacquez Trammell. Trammell won the high jump, long jump and triple jump at Smiths Station this past weekend. Daniel Etherton also won the Javelin event for the Rams at 156-8. DonReco Glaze finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.33 seconds. Patrick Pigg placed third in the 3200-meter run. Dominic Whitlow finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.83 seconds, and the 4×100 team placed first at the meet as well.

LaFayette’s Daiquan Giddens finished 11th in Javelin at 124-2, Beulah’s Isaiah Glidewell finished 10th at 124-4 and LaFayette’s Jae’Lin McCurdy finished sixth at 131-10 in the event.

Lanett’s Deterrion Glaze finished eighth in shot put with a heave of 39-3, while LaFayette’s Antavious Woody finished third in the event at 41-8.

In the preliminaries, LaFayett’s Josh Combs finished seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.41 seconds. Valley’s Josh Heath finished 15th in the same preliminary with a time of 10:08.74.

Springwood girls

The Springwood girls also had a nice showing at Escambia Academy. Ninth-grader Jeeslyn Mabrey won the 100-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles. Ninth-grader Hannah Yeager won the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs.

Wildcats’ seventh-grader Bailey Haney finished third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 15.27 seconds, while seventh-grader Charlie Key finished sixth with a time of 15.70 seconds.

Key also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 33.1 seconds, while Haney finished third at 33.80 seconds.

Yeager finished sixth in the 400-meter run at 1:21.38. Springwood sophomore Ashlea Fuller finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles at 22.65 seconds. Fuller also finished third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 1:09.77. Key finished fourth in the long jump at 11-11.50.

Girls Smiths Station meet

LaFayette’s Toniya Collier finished fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.49 seconds. Collier’s teammate, Alahbra’J Todd finished seventh in the event with a time of 13.73. Feliah Greer finished second in shot put with a heave of 32-10.

The LaFayette girls also finished second in the 4×100 preliminaries with a time of 51.76.

In the 100-meter preliminary, Lanett’s BreAsia Hines finished 11th with a time of 13.63 seconds. Valley’s Jayla Lancaster finished 12th with a time of 13.63 seconds, as well. Lanett’s Aniya Fisher finished 13th at 13.70 and Valley’s Cortiryana Jones finished 14th with a time of 13.73.

Springwood boys

Eighth-grader Jonathan Johnson finished sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.20 second. Eighth-grader Skylar Piper finished 11th with a time of 14.81 seconds in the event.

Johnson finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.46 seconds. Piper finished ninth in the event at 31.41 seconds.

Seventh-grader Ryan Fuller finished fourth in the 1600-meter run at 6:31.64. Piper finished fifth in the event at 7:03.13.

Fuller finished third in the 3200-meter run at 14:09.85. Johnson finished third in the 110-meter hurdles at 22.35 seconds, and he finished fifth in the long jump at 15-05.00.
