WEST POINT — “Having a Ball with Books” is the theme for the 8th annual Book Day Camp, which is currently under way at Hawkes Children’s Library. The 9 a.m. until noon daily sessions started on Monday of this week and conclude on Friday. Children in the kindergarten through fifth grade age groups have been enjoying games, stories, crafts and snacks this week.

Dr. Lacey Southerland of Point University and teen volunteers have been running the camp this week. The children have enjoyed meeting featured athletes who come to talk about a certain sport. On Monday, Valley High tennis coach Eric Creel was there to talk about tennis, and on Tuesday, Point University women’s basketball coach Tory Wooley was there to talk about basketball.

Book Day Camp is a free program sponsored by the Friends of Hawkes Library.

The library hosted Fun Fridays on June 14 and 21 and will have another one on July 12. There’s a story time session at 10:30 for those in the Pre-k through second grade. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. and from noon until 1 p.m. there will be stories and games for those in the grades 3-6 age group.

WOW Wednesday will be taking place on July 24. From 1-3 p.m. there will be ice cream and water play for all ages. Children are asked to wear a swimsuit and have a towel to play on the splash pad near city hall. Railroads will be providing the ice cream for everyone to make their own sundae.
