Mrs. Helen M. Laney — 1927-2019

Mrs. Helen M. Laney, 91, of Valley, passed away on May 30 at Diversicare of Riverchase in Birmingham. She was born on July 20, 1927, in the Shawmut community.

Mrs. Laney is survived by her son, David; daughter-in-law, Michelle; her grandchildren, Amanda, Madison, and Erica, who all affectionately referred to her as “Dolly;” and her loyal cat, Sami; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Iva Mae Moon; her husband, Willis to whom she was married for 65 years; her brothers, Thomas, Hilma, George, and Fred Moon, and her sisters, Mazel Smith and Lois Watson.

Helen graduated from Valley High School in 1946 and was a lifelong resident of Valley. She worked for West Point Pepperell for many years in Shawmut Mill and Fairfax Mill before finally retiring from the Fairview Plant. She loved to cook, sew, feed the birds, and tend to her cat. She was a charter member of the Shawmut First Church of the Nazarene and loved her church family dearly.

A visitation will be held from 6 p.m. through 8 p.m. EDT. on June 5 at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley. Funeral services will be held on June 6 at 2 p.m. EDT. at the Shawmut First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Tim Campbell officiating.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Shawmut First Church of the Nazarene.
