VALLEY — The Valley High School Combined Classes will have their reunion on June 8, 2019, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Sunny’s Home Cooking Restaurant.
Two VHS seniors will be awarded scholarships again this year, the Jim Turnipseed Scholarship and the Doug Lockridge Scholarship.
The VHSCC meets every three months to renew friendships and reminisce on high school memories. The idea of bringing all the VHS classes together first began 25 years ago, in 1994. Lanier King, the VHSCC founder, formed an alumni association and helped plan yearly picnics or a grand reunion banquet. The VHSCC’s first reunion included the graduating classes of 1940-1944, with 1940 being the first graduating class of VHS.
As time passed, more graduating classes became included in this reunion, and the classes welcomed anyone who had been an alumni for 50 years or more.
However, this year they have decided to make a change and remove the 50 year requirement so that everyone that has graduated from VHS is included.
They hope this change will encourage more people in the community to join.
“Our little town of Valley is comprised of many good people and memories,” said member Bennie Dorough. “We’ve been a tight-knit community, and had friendships with people older and younger than ourselves.”
Dorough said the quarterly reunions are a special way to keep in touch with people you once saw every day.
“When the reunion started, we had all began our livelihoods and careers. It is a special way to keep in touch with other alumni, and see how we are doing in our day to day lives,” said member Charlotte Tucker.
Sunny’s has agreed to set aside space for the VHSCC, so anyone attending is asked to RSVP as soon as possible to ensure the correct numbers of meals are reserved.
They ask that everyone graduated from VHS attends; to keep the tradition alive.
To RSVP, call Bennie Dorough (706) 773-0363, Shelby Campbell (706) 576-4054, Charlotte Tucker (706) 518-5416, Ray Tucker (706) 773-4185 or Gail White (706) 773-5623.
