LANETT — The Lanett City Council approved a three-item agenda Monday evening.

A first reading was held for a cable franchise ordinance. It can be approved following a second reading at the next council session.

City Attorney Stanley Gray explained that a cable ordinance had been previously approved under the name of Marcus/Charter. There’s been a name change, and a new ordinance needs to be approved under the new name of Spectrum Southeast LLC.

The council unanimously approved two resolutions, one approving professional services to Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood, Inc. and another approving the assignment of the Mr. Greenjeans solid waste contract to AmWaste, Inc., to be a trash provider for the region.

The Goodwyn, Mills & Cawood contract relates to engineering and other professional services for the Lanett airport master plan and layout plan.

GM&C representative Ryan Pearce was present to answer any questions about what the company will be doing.

However, it could be some time before the airport reopens. The current expansion is in its final phases, which will expand the runway from 3,100 feet to about 4,400 feet. Once it’s finished, work will begin on a second runway expansion to lengthen the runway another 1,000 feet, taking it up to 5,400 feet. This allows commercial jets to land in Lanett.

A new terminal is also going to be built at the airport along with a new access road to Phillips Road near exit 77 on I-85.

Headquartered near Birmingham, AmWaste is the new solid waste provider for Lanett, Valley, LaGrange and a growing number of locations.

AmWaste President Chip Russell and Randy Lee were at the council meeting to thank the city for their support. Allen Hunt, president of Mr. Greenjeans, was present to thank the city for allowing his company to provide solid waste services for many years. AmWaste recently purchased Mr. Greenjeans and will serve the areas formerly served by the LaGrange-based company.

“AmWaste is here to provide top-quality service to the City of Lanett,” Russell said.

The council said it was pleased with Friday’s announcement that Tractor Supply would be building a big new store on the Lanett Mill site and that the annual Lanett Film Festival had been well received.

“That’s great news about Tractor Supply,” said Councilman Tony Malone. “I liked what the mayor said about Lanett being open for business.”

Council members Jamie Heard, Charles Looser and Angelia Thomas hailed the news as well. Thomas said she had very much enjoyed attending film festival sessions over the weekend.

“I had a great time,” she said. “This is a great thing for the city. It gives you a chance to meet new people and to see the very impressive work they are doing in producing new films. There were some very talented people in our community. We are hoping for this to continue and for more local people to come out, see this quality entertainment and meet the talented people who are making these motion pictures.”

McCoy said the festival was a success.

“It’s our plan to continue this,” he said. “No one around us is doing this right now. We have some really good venues where people can watch these new films, and the filmmakers enjoy coming here.”

The council met in executive session for about a half-hour, resumed the open session without taking any action and adjourned the meeting.
