LANETT — A sixth-grade teacher at Springwood School has earned a grant to start a campus garden, according to a news release from the school.

The teacher, April Haney, wrote the proposal to the GISA Fred H. Loveday Endowment Foundation. The proposal sought funds to start a garden that would serve the students and the local community.

The grant required the project to involve original and innovative ideas, a significant number of students, and have an impact that would continue over time.

The grant was for $1,000, and construction on the garden will start in May during the school’s Wildcat Workday, which is an annual event where students serve local organizations and individuals.

The garden will have a water feature and benches per the proposal. Once the garden is complete, a collaborative effort from students will tend to the garden.

“The school garden will provide an outreach opportunity to the people in our community and will also provide a peaceful, outdoor classroom where students can learn,” Haney said in a news release.

Springwood Head of School Lawrie McCown said he was thrilled for Haney being selected as one of three recipients of the grant.

“To be selected for the grant affirms her initiative, her vision and passion as an educational leader,” he said. “Her desire to provide a STEM educational environment involving each grade of the school in serving the broader Valley community speaks directly to the vision and mission of Springwood School.”
