The Troup County School System hired a new chief financial officer at Thursday night’s board meeting.

The board hired Dr. Scott A. Burckbuchler, who most recently served as the superintendent of Essex County Public Schools in Tappahannock, Virginia.

According to a resume for Burckbuchler on the Essex County Public Schools website, he served as superintendent of the Essex County Public Schools System for six years. According to information on the Essex County website, Burckbuchler’s superintendent contract was terminated in April. Before the superintendent position, Burckbuchler was the chief financial officer at James City County Public Schools in Williamsburg, Virginia from 2005 to 2013. He also served as the acting superintendent for that school system for a seven-month period from 2010 to 2011.

He has a doctor of philosophy in education from Old Dominion.

Superintendent Brian Shumate said there were more than 20 applicants for the position, although some of them were not qualified. Shumate said TCSS planned to interview four candidates, but interviewed three after one candidate backed out at the last minute.

A nine-person panel helped determine that Burckbuchler was the best candidate for the position.

“He is a CFO by training but went in as an interim superintendent and decided to pursue the superintendency in that particular district,” Shumate said. “After deliberation and also vetting references and a lot of good background, we’re making the recommendation tonight.”

The motion passed unanimously along with the rest of the human resources moves for the month.

It was unclear when Burckbuchler would take on the new role. Don Miller is currently serving in the interim CFO role after Byron Jones left the position earlier this year.
