LAFAYETTE — The LaFayette boys basketball team took care of business early in its 73-34 win against Woodlawn on Thursday. 

The Bulldogs came out fast, scoring the first 17 points of the game. Woodlawn failed to score until the 2:20 mark in the quarter. 

This allowed LaFayette head coach Obadiah Threadgill to rest his starters and play other guys that do not get a lot of minutes. 

After playing the entire first quarter, the starters sat out the second quarter. They reentered the game in the third quarter, but halfway through, Threadgill started putting in the bench. All five starters sat out the remaining eight minutes of the game. 

“They [the bench] will defend until the cows come home, but offensively we need a little bit of work,” Threadgill said. “When Corey and Tae [Burton] aren’t in the game, some other guys need to share that responsibility of being playmakers, not just shooters. That’s something we’re really working on with them.”

One player missing from the starting five was Tae Burton. Burton missed the game with a lower back injury, but Threadgill said that it was not serious and he would be back by next week.

“Luckily, we have so much talent that if one guy isn’t able to play we can have the next man up,” Threadgill said. “We aren’t going to bring him back until he gets healthy.”

This allowed sophomore center Antavious Woody to get his first start of the year. 

This created a lineup with Woody and Je’Mathus Reese, both of which play center most of the time on the court. For some teams, that would be a weird fit, but LaFayette is not any team.

“Most of our offenses are interchangeable, and with the exception of Woody, we try to play positionless as possible,” Threadgill said. “We practice a lot of different guys together. We want to put guys in situations where they aren’t naturally comfortable…. We try to be ready for anything. We want to create a complete basketball player.”

With the win, the Bulldogs move to 3-0 in their area and have a chance to clinch the area regular season on Friday when they travel to Ranburne. LaFayette won the last matchup easily, winning by 39.
