Mrs. Sara Jones — 1932-2020

Sara Jones, 87, a longtime resident of West Point passed away on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at Florence Hand Nursing home in LaGrange.

She was the beloved wife of 59 years to Ray Jones who preceded her in death. Born on July 12, 1932, to the late Mattie and Sidney Moon of Shawmut Alabama, she was the youngest of six, who have all preceded her. The 1950 Homecoming Queen, Sara graduated from Valley High School and worked briefly at Batson Cook before moving to her primary job of caring for her family.  She was renowned by the family as an excellent cook and host.

Sara took great joy in birds and butterflies. She particularly enjoyed watching the hummingbirds who delighted her throughout the summer.

She was a longtime Sunday School teacher, taking advantage of her gift with crafts to entertain the kids. Sara was an original member of the West Point Senior Center and served for many years as the treasurer. She found great happiness with her friends (Nancy, Grace, Nicky, Elsie, Doris, and Ann) playing Mexican Train and dining at Rogers. Also, a special thanks to Tabitha Sands for her companionship in recent years.

Sara is survived by her sons Art (Ginny)Jones of New Braunfels Texas, and Tim (Angela) Jones of Thomasville, Georgia; grandchildren Caitlin and husband Adam of Winston Salem North Carolina, Matthew (Jenn)Jones of Elberton Georgia, Hannah Jones of Thomasville, Georgia; step-granddaughters Shelley and Monica and great-grandchildren Scotty and Bren of New Braunfels, Texas.

She leaves behind beloved nieces and nephews Lynn, Sandra, Johnny, Linda, Rita, and Ellen. She was preceded in death by nieces and nephews Lew, Beth, and Phillip.

The family will greet friends for visitation on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Bluffton Funeral Services in Lanett. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020, at 11 a.m. EST also at Bluffton Funeral Services. Graveside services will follow at Marseilles Cemetery in West Point.

The rev. John Mattox will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the West Point Senior Center or charity of choice.
