The Troup County Board of Commissioners recently announced Sonya Conroy as Interim Chief Finance Officer, effective Jan. 15, 2020.

“It has been wonderful thus far,” Conroy said. “I’ve been truly touched by the support of my coworkers, family and friends. We have just recently wrapped up the audit. I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead.”

Conroy said she is excited for how she can help the county financially.

“[I want to] look for better efficiencies and use of sources where possible,” Conroy said. “I plan to maintain the financial security that the county has successfully attained while ensuring compliance and stability for our growing community.”

Before receiving this position, Conroy worked as the Troup County Assistant Finance Officer since 1998 where she was responsible for assisting with overseeing operations of the county accounting system and financial reporting system, including revenue management, budgeting, accounts payable and vendor compliance, general ledger maintenance and reconciliation, and capital asset management, among other tasks.

“Having been with the county for 21 years, I have experience with many of the duties of the CFO and have worked hand in hand with the former CFO who diligently prepared me as his successor,” Conroy said.

As interim chief finance officer, she will be responsible for advising county personnel on financial matters; coordinating the development of the county’s annual operating and capital budgets; managing cash balances, revenues and expenditures to ensure compliance with budget objectives; overseeing millage rates for the taxation of property; managing the proceeds from special purpose local option sales taxes; and overseeing the administration of grant programs.

“I would like the community to know how excited I am for the opportunity,” Conroy said. “I intend to continue the superior quality of performance that the finance department has achieved.”

According to the county, Conroy is scheduled to remain in the interim position for an undetermined period.

“We decided to offer her the position at the interim level, and she is being given the opportunity to test drive the position,” County Manager Eric Mosley said. “We may put it back out there, but right now is a very busy time for the county … We need the stability in this timeframe. We think a lot of her and we know what a great leader she is.”
