The City of Lanett got its name from a combination of surnames of early textile leaders Lafayette Lanier and Theodore Bennett. The city was first known as Bluffton from 1865 and then in 1895 the Alabama Legislature formally changed the city’s name to Lanett.

To commemorate the city’s 125th anniversary, Mayor Kyle McCoy announced the city will have an activity day on Apr. 4.

The city’s actual anniversary date slipped by on Super Bowl Sunday, but we’re glad the city is taking the time to recognize such an incredible accomplishment.

In April, the event will be held in the downtown area and have food trucks and vendors available.

The hope is that everyone turns out to this event to celebrate a community where many have spent their entire lives and are now raising children that will continue to shape Lanett.

Also, during that celebration, the mayor said the city will honor Lanett High School’s Class 1A football championship.

We have written in this space that they deserve some recognition for the amazing undefeated and record-breaking season Coach Story and his team put together and that day will soon be upon us. Again, congratulations to Panther Nation.

Activity day will conclude with fireworks over the old mill site — the site that started it all back in 1865.

We urge everyone in this community and even neighboring communities to come out and show your love and support for the City of Lanett and its history.
