Alleged shoplifter runs from police

VALLEY — An alleged shoplifter at Marvin’s ran from police and had to be tased by officers, according to a press release from the Valley Police Department.

The suspect was later identified as Richard Lee Murray, 51, of Montgomery. Murray was charged with robbery third, possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and obstruction of governmental operations.

The VPD responded to the call at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday and responded to Marvin’s, located at 2918 20th Avenue. Store associates pointed out Murray, who ran when officers attempted to talk to him. Officers caught up to him in front of the store and took him to the ground.

Murray fought with officers and refused to obey all commands, according to the press release. Officers then used a Taser twice and Murray was handcuffed.

Murray complained of chest pains and was taken to EAMC Lanier by ambulance. While there, he allegedly attempted to hide a small packet of drugs, according to the press release. The packet was field tested and returned positive for methamphetamine.

Murray was released by EAMC-Lanier and was taken to the Chambers County Detention Facility.
