Basketball season in Chambers County is coming to an end, with only a couple of teams still playing in the Alabama High School Athletic Association postseason.

Only the Lanett boys and LaFayette boys are still in the playoffs, with the Panthers searching for the 1A championship and the Bulldogs aiming for the 2A title. We had a bunch of teams advance to the region tournament, which is an accomplishment to be proud of.

Chambers Academy also nearly pulled off the sweep in the Alabama Independent School Association, with both the girls and boys teams reaching the state title game before losing.

Lanett will play Jacksonville Christian on Monday at Legacy Arena in Birmingham at 11:30 a.m. ET. Obviously, the Panthers are going for the sweep of winning a title in football and basketball in the same season, which would be an incredible accomplishment.

Lanett Head Coach Richard Carter is also aiming for a state title in his final year on the sideline. He said earlier this year that this would be his final year on the sideline, and a championship would be the perfect way to end an amazing career. It would be the John Elway type exit that everyone dreams about.

LaFayette is still chasing a perfect season, which is hard to accomplish at any level. The Bulldogs will face Barbour at 5:30 p.m. ET on Monday at Legacy Arena in Birmingham.

These are not short drives in the middle of the workweek for anyone. They require drives of over an hour, plus a big-time commitment and late night just to return and head back to work the next day. But it would mean a lot for our teams to have a big crowd at those games.

It’s always interesting once teams reach this portion of the state tournament. Just about everyone has a crowd, but some schools go all out with large crowds of fans, friends and family. Neither Lanett or LaFayette are large schools, but both have big fan bases and proud alumni all over Chambers County.

It would be awesome for as many of those fans to show up as possible to support these two teams as they try to win state championships. If you can’t make it, we’ll have updates on social media throughout both games, as well as stories online and in the newspaper.

Hopefully, both teams end up as the only ones left standing in their regions in Birmingham, site of the state semifinals and state championship.

That would be another trip worth making.
