The Troup County School System is expected to approve its school calendars for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school years Thursday night.

The school board was given the calendars to review during Tuesday night’s board meeting.

“On Aug. 12, our first day of school this past year, we received three calls in the public relations office asking what the first day of school was for the [following] year, so we knew this was important,” Yolanda Stephen, public relations director for TCSS, said at Tuesday’s meeting.

Stephen said 23 calendar committee members, including teachers, principals and school media specialists, helped create the two calendars.

“The top three things that we received [as feedback], in order, was No. 1, a full week at Thanksgiving,” Stephen said. “No. 2, to be out of school by Memorial Day and No. 3 was two full weeks at Christmas. We created a prototype similar to last year that fit the bill for these three.”

Stephen said the group met on Dec. 10 and Jan. 9.

The school system is going from 178 student days to 180 days for the next two years.

Teachers will have 190 total days.

“We added an additional day for winter break at the request of some of our teachers,” Stephen said. “And that came back from the field studies that some of the calendar committee members did in their particular schools.”

Spring break was also moved up a week to allow for two weeks of review before Georgia Milestone testing.

Superintendent Brian Shumate said there was some discussion about adding a winter break in February, but it would’ve forced teachers to go back to work in July.

2020-2021

Aug. 10: School starts

May 26 — Last day of school
