HUGULEY — The Christian Service Center is taking precautions due to the coronavirus, but Director Cheryl Myers is confident she can continue providing emergency food to local families if they follow a new procedure. The CSC is not open for regular hours and food is distributed by appointment only.

“If they call us at (334) 476-2605, we will give them a number and a time they can come to the center to pick up a box of food,” she said. “They won’t have to get out of their car and come inside. If they drive around to the side of the building, we will have the box of food on a table for them. They can tell us their number, and they can pick it up.”

Myers said the CSC has been giving out approximately 60 boxes a month since the social distancing began as a result of the spread of COVID-19.

“We were fortunate to have put in a big order with the East Alabama Food Bank just before this happened,” she said. “We did it two or three days before all the buying started at the grocery stores. I can’t get used to what I’m seeing. I’m used to buying macaroni and cheese anywhere from 50 to 100 boxes at a time. I’m lucky now to get one or two boxes. We buy in bulk from places like the food bank and Sam’s in Auburn, and we appreciate what they do. We also appreciate individuals and churches helping us with donations.”

Since the CSC is giving food by appointment only, they are asking people to make requests only in emergencies.

“We are doing our best to provide emergency boxes of food, and we have been helping around 60 families each month,” Myers said.
