LAFAYETTE – As plans are being formalized for the eventual reopening of educational institutions, the Chambers County School District tentatively plans to start classes for the 2020-2021 school year on Wednesday, August 12, 2020. Teachers would begin preparing their classrooms for students’ return on Tuesday, August 4.

“Of course, these dates could change according to data associated with COVID-19, the virus that resulted in our shutdown on March 19,” Chambers County School Superintendent Dr. Kelli Hodge said in a press release. “Since that time, we have carefully monitored instructions from the Governor, State School Superintendent, national, state, and local health officials regarding how and when we should proceed this fall. We will continue following the guidelines provided to us for ensuring a safe environment when our students return to the classroom.” 

The upcoming school year calendar, as proposed, is available for view on the school district’s website at www.chambersk12.org. Should any change become necessary, parents, students and employees will be notified immediately.

More information will be available in the coming weeks after the state superintendent holds a conference to go over the proper way to reopen early next week.

“It is our hope that we will be able to begin classes on the currently proposed date,” Hodge added. “Approximately 80% of the school districts across Alabama have expressed a desire to start back around the same time.

Dr. Hodge also noted that this week’s monthly Board of Education meeting will be streamed live on the school district’s Facebook page. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 17, beginning at 4:00 p.m. CDT.
