A man has been arrested following a high-speed chase that reached over 100 miles per hour, and a Lanett police officer is recovering after wrecking her vehicle in pursuit.

According to a press release from the Lanett Police Department, Jamal Mayfield was flown to Columbus for treatment after wrecking his vehicle trying to turn at the corner of 69th Avenue and Highway 50. Lanett Police Officer Andrea Pierce was taken to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, where she was treated and released.

The LPD had received a call about a stolen vehicle out of West Point, and Pierce spotted the vehicle in the 4400 block of Highway 50 in Lanett.

Once the offender, Jamal Mayfield, spotted the police vehicle, he re-entered the vehicle and started trying to evade the officer, fleeing on Highway 50 toward LaFayette.

According to the press release, Mayfield was trying to run police and bystanders off the road.

Mayfield has felony warrants out of Georgia and will have pending charges from the Lanett Police Department because of the pursuit. According to Lanett Sgt. Robert Waldrop, those charges are expected to be attempting to elude a law enforcement officer and bringing stolen property into the state (theft of property first) in Alabama.
