It is back to school time, although the landscape of the return to school is different from past years. For some, one thing remains the same — time to buy supplies.

If your child goes to a Chambers County School District school, they will be provided the basic supplies needed by the district. That is fantastic, and we applauded the district in this space shortly after it was announced.

Let’s take a minute, however, to be honest. Those supplies will not make it the entire school year – assuming we make it to May with kids attending in-person sessions.

Have no fear, there are more options out there for parents. Several churches and charities have held or will hold backpack giveaways.

This past weekend there was a giveaway at the Verizon store, and there will be another this weekend.

If you have ever shopped for school supplies, you will know that can lighten the wallet pretty quick so these drives are a tremendous help for those in need.

In our post-COVID world, there are likely some families in a position they’ve never been in before. We know some people have lost jobs, income and aren’t sure when those things will get back to normal, so any help with school supplies is a plus.

As we spend time thinking about what makes our community amazing, we can point to events like these as a prime example. The thoughtfulness and generosity of our neighbors are overwhelming at times.

Free school supplies are not the only thoughtful act here in Chambers County. Lanett City Schools announced not long ago that they will participate in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program. This program will see to it that every student in the LCS district will receive breakfast and lunch at no cost to the student’s family.

We will eventually get past COVID, but we trust that the generosity and thoughtfulness this community shows on a daily basis will always remain a staple of Chambers County.
