LANETT — Lanett’s downtown fountain has not been running for several weeks now but will be back in operation again very soon. Brothers Hunter and Brandon Cook were on the site Friday installing new parts and making needed adjustments to get it running again.

“In some ways, this is very simple but in other ways it’s complicated,” Hunter Cook said.

The fountain ceased running in June after being clogged by an unknown substance that was later found to be cremated human remains.

“We didn’t anticipate having to tell people not to put something like that in the fountain,” said Mayor Kyle McCoy. “But, we are hoping people know not to be putting anything in it that might stop it from running. We see the fountain as a symbol of the community. When it is running the way, it was designed and built to run it’s a beautiful sight. It was especially impressive when it was pink during Breast Cancer Month, and it was really looking good when it was blue in cooperation with Governor Kay Ivey’s initiative honoring our front-line healthcare workers and first responders. They have been real heroes during this pandemic we have been dealing with.”

The mayor urges local citizens to remain vigilant until COVID-19 is gone.

The Cook brothers said Friday that the water will still be sky blue when the fountain gets back to running. They did find something interesting while working around the fountain on Friday. It appears to be a large river stone that’s painted gray with “John 3:16” painted on it.

“That’s an uplifting message,” said Hunter Cook. “It wasn’t in the bowl, and it’s not the sort of thing to keep it from running.”
